What a great post. I know some new carers who have been gobsmacked at the degree of aggression and rage in their new foster babe. Will send them this and share as much as I can - great insight. Your honesty is awesome.
Worries me that training might not prepare carers for the depth of emotions they are might see, and CJ's comment says a lot about the screening process. If you aren't prepared to love the child why on earth would you foster?
I am happy to report that my foster babe and I smile at one another all the time. After 5 years we now share 'the look' - that 'I know exactly what you are thinking and why you say that' exchange of glances that is underpinned by deep affection. She said to me the other day 'I know you love me no matter what mum, even when I'm a brat'! To me that's a real milestone.

I to remember the smiling faces that greeted me at the front door and when the counselor had left me into the care of these wonderful people. That was the end of the smiles, friendliness and compassion. It was always amazing to me how miserable adults could put on a smile so easily when their was someone at their door.
