i just wanted to commend you on overcoming the adversities and challenges that i know u guys face aging out of the foster system...i have been a single male foster parent since 1999. i have only fostered about 6 black male teenages, (the lost ones) and my experiences, despite some issues, have been relatively positive..my very first foster son who is now 27 yrs old, fully employed and partially college educated has done quite well. his biological mom was kiiled my the serial kille Anthony Sowell, here in Cleveland, but he has been my son since 1999. after he aged out, he still lived with me, went to college for 2 yrs, dropped out, still lived with me as he worked, met his fiance and has been with her ever since, they have a 5yr old.. my grandbaby...my other son, 23 yr old Lee, ran away from me because he didnt want to go to school but wound up yrs later getting his GED and will not attend ITT tech and he works fulltime and has a 3 yr old baby...i stayed in their lives and continued to guide them into adulthood...i'm always reminded of how our story is the exception and i just say it's God's grace/ never me!!

Donna, you are an amazing person, a strong person, someone who is not going to let anyone or anything hold you down, stop you from doing what you do and that for you means helping as many kids as possible and being a strong advocate for children no matter what. I know things happen for a reason, god brings people together for a reason. We may not understand why things happen but, one day everything will make sense. I hope you keep doing whatever you can to do the best thing you can do and want to do and for you that is helping kids. I am so glad we met and are friends, I hope we continue to be friends long into the future.

Thomas,

May your story serve as a reminder of the extent of God’s love, presence, and ability to convert the rejected stone into the cornerstone. I have only known you through business affiliations for a short time but quickly understand the reason our paths crossed. I pray that in all of your travels and future endeavors that you continue to remain cognizant and fully aware of the value of altruism as it was extended to you. You are a true gentleman, a true inspiration, a true success story, and a living testament that signifies the power perseverance through God’s mercy and grace.

Stay Bless my Brother!!!!

Thomas,
Your decision to become a member of the Kairos Torch, Prison Ministry is huge. You will be bringing so much to the young men you will be ministering to, I am very proud to take this journey with you into youth detention centers bringing the love of Jesus Christ to boys who need to learn they are loved and can be forgiven. I know you are the real deal and will be a great role model for boys who are experiencing that feeling of being alone and lost that you felt as a boy.

Bless you Thomas,
Jim

At this time I am doing my research to start a program for youth "aged out" of foster care. Unfortunately, I keep hitting road blocks. If anyone could point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated!

The program is based on a 2yr lifestyle plan. The "plan" will house 30-40 "aged out" youth @ a time (without dependents as resources @ this time do not allow). While teaching life skills such as social skills, work training & ethic, & setting up savings plans upon "exiting" the program. Upon" exit", many will be placed in rehabed foreclosed homes & rented for cost, with option to purchase. We will also provide emotional support, resources, & continue to develop additional services to promote as close to healthy "norm" lives for the future.

Any ideas or additional information, would be helpful. Thank you

I am so proud of you girl and grateful! Every child in foster care that we reach with stories of others who have walked in their shoes is another child that knows they are not alone, and most importantly, they are not at fault.

Love you!

I used to be in foster care. But i'm one of the lucky ones that have escaped the system. i was adopted on November 3, 2007. i was in the system all through my childhood. i lost the most important part of my life. I am soon to be 16 and am achieving many goals. the family that adopted me never gave up hope on me and I love them dearly.
I was first in the foster care system since i was two and a half.

I knew Donna in grade school. She was one of my best friends. Growing up with her, I would never have known how hard her life was. It was a small community and we were close.

Donna, you are an amazing woman! What you have overcome is a miracle. I am so thankful to have you still in my life. Your story has brought tears to my eyes. Tears of sorrow that anyone, let alone a friend, went through what you did and I feel a guilty I didn't do more for you. I also have tears of joy that you made a wonderful life for yourself and your family. It is truly an honor and I am proud to call you a friend. You broke the cycle for your family and that is something no one will ever take away from you. Stand tall and proud!! I love you!!!!

Donna, thank you so much for sharing this. Wow this is such an amazing life story. Your courage to share and to reach out is something that really inspires me. So often we push back those negative things that happen in our lives maybe from our youth and dont speak out about it. I feel like your life story will help so many and for you to put yourself out there, I have no words really to express how I feel. Thank you so much!! You truly are an inspiration much love to you
