My name is Brianna Baucum. I am 19 years old and aged out of Foster Care on June 1, 2009. I remember the weeks before I aged out i was like I am so excited im about to be grown. Cant no one tell me what to do at 18. I look back and thank God I didnt get put on the street at 18, I thank God I didnt burn all my bridges because I thought i was grown. However
What do you do when... You still Cant drive and its a phobia to cross the street due to being shelterd and used to the system and its tactics? What do you when you are in Walmart because Your afraid you are going to get left by your friends just as you did when you were dropped off at the DFPS office?

What do you do when Holidays approach and you are in the dormitory and you have no place to call home and when you do you have no good memories to remanace about because in reality you are just a Guest?

What do you do when your benefits run out. Better yet what do you do when you are on the straight and narrow and you feel you dont need them anymore however you seem to be losing out on the relationships within the benefits?
What do you do when your sick? Who do you call.
What do you do when things run low? who do you call...
What do you do when you want to talk and due to confidentiality you cant talk to your staff that said they were there...?
What do you do when the state labels you from jump street, and you fight and try to go against the odds.. and you fall that one last time... that time where your chances have run out. The time when you are actually Grown and Foster Care is the past! And foster care is no longer your crutch, your support, but now your inspiration and stumbling block.
You thank Whatever higher power or source you think Got you there. Because I am a living witness, and testimony that through all the brigdges i have burned there is atleast one i have crossed two i have rebulit and a lifetime that i have yet to tread... I am thankful..

Capri Cruz, I want to let you know you are an inspiration to all former foster children, myself included. Our lives parallel on many levels. Your philosophy of life is just about identical to mine. I find it wonderful that you had the courage to publish the details of your abuse. I'll have to read it. How freeing this must be. I am an educator and am reluctant to reveal so much of myself in a book. It has crossed my mind on too many occasions to count. I am working on my courage to do it. I am also persuing a PhD. I wish you good luck with that, but we both know luck has nothing to do with it. Strength, courage, determination, and stable relationships has everthing to do with it.

When I was a little girl growing up in Morristown, Tn, my parents used to take my brother and sister and I to Bean Station for lunch every Sunday after church. Close by there was a orphanage that we would visit and take clothes and food and toys. I remember playing with a little girl, regularly, but of course today cannot remember her name. I'm interested in the history of that orphanage and it's name. Can you or anyone help me? I am now 58, so this would have been 48 years ago. The orphanage most likely was still in existence all through the 60's. Thanks.

Thank you for sharing. I am a product of the foster care system - that has all but ruined my life and destroyed any love that I may have had a chance at really knowing. Although today I am a CPA and Tax Attorney - I live a rather hermit life only dreaming of a moment of peace to really understand what the love of family really means. May your work here on this site continue to inspire and uplift others.

Miss Capri, great accomplishments by truly a great person who has adapted and overcame much. Love and happiness can be learned even by those who have had a life of severe abuse and torture. There is hope even for people who were once called wards of the state.
